I love doing nail designing and I would want to have a certificate in that but my mom thinks I won’t make money as a nail technician, I have a book portfolio of all my nail designs that I do and my mom won’t let me go to beauty school I just want a certificate in something that am really good at and it’s nail designing. It’s not like I want to work at a nail salon because I do want to go to college and get a degree in business and having a certificate in nails is like a back up for me especially if people see my nail art portfolio book and want me to do their nails. I do a lot of people nails for like special occasions when they don’t want to go to the nail salon and pay so much because i only charge $15-$20 and my friend who is a photographer lets me do models nails when he is taking pictures of the models.
so my question is:
Do i need a certificate to be a nail technician especially if am doing people’s nails?
should I go to beauty school?
thank-you!
*please no rude answers*
, Yes. You need to be licensed in anything that involved the Cosmetology Industry. It is illegal(In the US.) for people to charge without being license, and if the state board ever found out, You would be fined. Once your 18….No one can stop you from doing what you want to do. If you want to become a Nail Tech, Take the Nail course. But you do need to be 17-18 before you can even enter school.

i’m looking to become a nail technician but none of the colleges near me offer it. im thinkin of a home study course from essential nails. but im wondering if its possible to train thru just a salon, how long it takes and if there is a qualification at the end of it?
Where abouts are you based. There is a place up north that offers short intensive courses which you can do one on one or in a class. To learn acrylics it is a one day course and costs £200. You can buy the kit from them as well for £60. They are really good and they stay with you untill your done. You get an IHBC diploma at the end of it which enables you to get insurance and a job in a salon if you wish. They are based in Yorkshire but she can travel.

I’m thinking about taking a nail technicians course on the side, i wanted to know if there is a lot of jobs in that area of work, how much it pays and stuff like that. If someone can help me answer these questions, i will be very grateful.( I’ll pray for you too
) Also, do I have to go to school every single day or is there another way I can get to the state boards… Thanx to all who read this and even bigger thanx to those who give answers, especially logical ones.
Well, I think that this depends on where you live and what you intend for much money.
If you are very good in your job, kind, have logical prices and you advertise your business in a proper way, I think that you will have success.
This is my personal experience and I can say that I am happy with what I did in my life till now.
Think about one thing every time. Now you have to study and learn very well your job.
See if you can find any connections from your school that will connect you to the work market.
See if it is a good idea for you to build a website and advertise your business. You have to evaluate the cost of the site and the benefit that your business will have.
See if it is a good idea to give a lecture about the health of nails, where you live. This way, they will get to know you and take confidence.
The last thing that I want to tell you, is not to think just about money. I am sure that you don’t, but as you have posted your question, seems like this. Think that QUALITY OF SERVICES BRINGS MONEY.
Good luck in your life and have confidence to your abilities!

I have a friend who is pursing a Communication degree, she still haves about 2 years to go. However, now she is thinking about pursing a Nail Technician certificate so that she can do nails. Is this a smart move? I’m not sure what to tell her. She has two kids and they are relying on her husband’s income ($45,000-$50,000 a yr) and she feels the need to contribute to the household. BTW, she still wants to purse the Communication degree, but she says she needs to earn an income now.
So the question basically is: Is it a smart move or idea to purse both concurrently? Do nail technicians even make a sufficient income? I don’t want her to waste her time, if it’s not a good idea. Do you think it will just be a waste of money and time as well?
Thanks. Your insights are appreciated.
She is currently looking for a new job, she was just laid off. The reason why she wants to pursue this profession in the meanwhile is because a friend of hers just landed a job as a nail technician and is earning close to $1,000 a week (she earns only commission, no base pay).
This is why I’m not sure what kind of advice to give her. Her results may vary, right?
i think its smart so long as its not going to distract her from her communication program which is really her main focus. The scheduling of those courses is usually flexible for pple who have other things on their plate. My friend was a chemistry major and did a massage therapy course in the evenings… it didn’t take that long for her to get certified, she got financial aid to do the program, and now she has lots of extra spending money (she’s a semester away from finishing her bachelor’s degree in chem.) and works really good hours. It was a little hard for her to get the money to pay the subsidized fees and her grades suffered a little but she says its worth it. I don’t really think you should tell her what to do either way, let her decide, she’s obviously an adult… at worst, she’ll waste time and money for a few months, at best, she’ll develop a new, marketable, back-up skill!!!

Just some nail designs i’ve done since i decided to go back to doing them myself. I am not a professional nail tech, but may go back to cosmetology school to sharpen my skills! Comments, opinions and ideas welcome.
